Beneficial Use

The uses of water that are deemed by law to provide legitimate bases for a water right. The state may assign or designate beneficial uses for particular Idaho water bodies to support. The Idaho legislature designates uses for water bodies. Pursuant to Rules of the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), IDAPA, “Water Quality Standards and Wastewater Treatment Requirements,” a beneficial use includes any of the various uses which may be made of the water of Idaho, including, but not limited to, domestic water supplies, industrial water supplies, agricultural water supplies, navigation, recreation in and on the water, wildlife habitat, and aesthetics.
